On the evening of Tuesday 5th May at Cinema Beltrade in Milan all the prizes of the fifth edition of MAX3MIN were announced.

First Prize 2000 euros
For Her

Feelings, like small fragments of cinema, move through constant evolutions and involutions. A question, a sunset, a silent pasture - “For Her” opens up an inner abyss in which the viewer recognises, with unsettling precision, their own experience of love. At the heart of the story lies a contradiction: Claire’s love comforts and oppresses at the same time. The film does not dissolve this tension, nor does it resolve or judge it. Through few images, rich in power and compositional intent, “For Her” touches, with precision and depth, the raw nerves of the terrifying yet everyday experience of human emotions.

by Joel Munu

Starting from the Hitchcockian premise that “cinema is life with the dull bits cut out”, Joel Munu portrays the existence of a man who feels irrelevant, yet at the same time is hounded by a film crew intent on turning his life into a film. The result is a short film imbued with an ironic melancholy, typical of Spanish cinema, which skilfully employs the rules of the medium to deconstruct the myth of spectacle, exposing its more morbid side. By playing with meta-cinema, it succeeds, lightly yet incisively, in revealing how the weight of narratives is pressing down upon - almost compressing - the reality that surrounds us.

In a world that constantly seeks to soften catastrophe through denial or superficial good intentions, the three filmmakers have chosen the path of the grotesque. Framed as a challenge - or better still, as a public execution - the short overturns the relationship between individual and system, turning the CO₂ quota into a brutal death sentence, yet one that is also tragically amusing. Indeed, the aesthetic, the sounds, the voices, and even the deaths themselves are irresistibly entertaining, while at the same time confronting us, without any filter, with our devastating presumption and our impending end.

The special mentions were awarded by Ernesto Schmied, a musician and specialist in historical flutes, and director and curator of the infrequent music festival.

For Her

I sentimenti, come piccoli frammenti di cinema, si muovono in costanti evoluzioni e involuzioni. Una domanda, un tramonto, un pascolo silenzioso - “For Her” apre una voragine interiore in cui lo spettatore riconosce, con inquietante precisione, il proprio vissuto amoroso. Al cuore della storia pulsa una contraddizione: l’amore di Claire che consola e al tempo stesso opprime. Il film non scioglie questa tensione, non la risolve né la giudica. Con poche immagini dense di forza e senso della composizione, For Her, con precisione e profondità, tocca i punti vivi dell’esperienza terrifica e quotidiana dei sentimenti umani.

Partendo dal presupposto hitchcockiano che “il cinema è come la vita senza tempi morti”, Joel Munu mette in scena l’esistenza di un uomo che si sente irrilevante, ma allo stesso tempo  perseguitato da una troupe che vuole trasformare la sua vita in un film. Ne vien fuori un corto innervato di ironica malinconia, tipica del cinema spagnolo, che utilizza con competenza le regole del linguaggio per decostruire il mito dello spettacolo, mettendo in mostra il suo lato più morboso. Giocando con il meta-cinema riesce a svelare con leggerezza quanto il peso delle narrazioni stia schiacciando, fino quasi a comprimerla, la realtà che ci circonda

In un mondo che cerca costantemente di edulcorare la catastrofe con la rimozione o il buonismo di facciata, i tre autori hanno scelto la strada del grottesco. Sotto la forma di una challenge, o ancora meglio  di un'esecuzione pubblica, il corto ribalta il rapporto tra uomo e sistema, rendendo la quota di CO₂ una condanna a morte brutale, ma anche tragicamente divertente. Infatti l’estetica, i suoni, le voci e le morti stesse, sono irresistibilmente divertenti, ma allo stesso tempo ci mettono davanti la nostra devastante presunzione e la nostra prossima fine, senza alcun filtro.
